Olveston bowls fun

Tonight should have been the opening night of the 2020 Bristol Men's Leagues Campaign. Sadly the current pandemic situation has disrupted not just bowls but life itself. Virtual Club Night – Monday 27th April

A message from Derek Olive, Men’s Captain:

Over the past 4 weeks of self isolation I have been hosting social events using ZOOM for other groups that I am involved in and thought that a Virtual Club Night for ODBC would not go amiss!

If you have not used ZOOM before then don’t panic. If you have a PC, Laptop, Tablet or Smart Phone and are able to use a Web Browser with audio and/or video then you will be able to join in. You don’t need to download any software. It is true to say that a hard wired connection may work better but WIFI should be fine!

Look out for the invitation for 7pm on Monday 27th which will be sent out this weekend and just click on the link in the email. You should then enter the meeting. I do need to admit you so please wait a few minutes if necessary. I will open the meeting about 10 minutes early to allow folk to join before 7pm.

We can’t play bowls but if you happen to have a drink to hand we can toast the group and at least say hello and catch up.

We will treat this as a test event as it may be the 1st time for many so be prepared for some delays and issues, but my experience so far with ZOOM has been very good.

If you wish to contact Derek, to test your connection beforehand, please use the ‘Contact’ page of the website. He says that the likelihood is that I will be in!

Bowls Survey

A member from Gerrard’s Cross BC (George Reid) is looking for help with his final year dissertation. His research is based on participation in lawn bowls, so the survey aims to find out the reasons that may stop people participating, and if they feel enough is being done in the sport to grow and evolve the game. All responses are anonymous, so the more responses the better.

We have been asked to circulate the details as widely as possible. It will only take about 5 minutes to complete and can be found at this link:

 Many Thanks for your help.

Bowls England LAUNCHES WORKOUT VIDEOS FOR BOWLERS

I am sure you will have been doing your best to keep as active and as fit as possible during this Covid19 Lock-Down in readiness for when we eventually get back out on the Bowls Green. You may have even been joining hundreds of thousands of others by participating in the Joe Wicks 9.00 am YouTube workouts. Well now you have the chance to do some Bowls Specific Workouts, thanks to Bowls England’s launch of three Workout Videos for Bowlers.

Details from Bowls England along with the required link are provided below

BOWLS ENGLAND LAUNCHES WORKOUT VIDEOS FOR BOWLERS

The workouts have been designed to help bowlers stay fit and well during the current coronavirus restrictions, so we are all ready and able to start playing again when we get back out on the green.

The workouts have been created especially for Bowls England by experienced Personal Trainer and Wellness Coach, Kate Swinson, to motivate and support our bowlers with the fitness and wellness services we need while we are in lock-down and unable to play.

The three workouts vary in intensity and have been specifically designed for bowlers. They range from an introduction level, suitable for all ages and abilities, that focuses on balance, flexibility and core strength, to a more advanced full body workout for the more physically able and a high intensity cardio workout for those who want even more.

Kate Swinson, our Personal Trainer, says: “Exercise and moving our bodies daily can help to alleviate feelings of stress and anxiety, and boost feel good endorphins that improve our mood.

“It is also a great way to break up your day and create a routine. I’ve created these workouts specifically for bowlers, to keep you fit and improve the flexibility, balance and strength that you need to play bowls safely, as this can decline rapidly if we don’t remain active. “Staying fit and healthy through regular exercise and movement can still be achieved even if you’re self-isolating. You need very little space and the only equipment you need to do these workouts is a sturdy chair and your bowls.”

Of course, while we’ve designed them specifically for you, anyone can do these workouts – so feel free to share them with all your non-bowling friends and family too!

Workout 1 (Introduction for all ages and abilities)
Focusing on balance, flexibility and core strength.
Equipment required: Sturdy chair and a set of bowls.

Workout 2 (Advanced full body workout)
Focusing on building strength and balance and targeting core.
Equipment required: An exercise/yoga/camping mat and a set of bowls.

Workout 3 (Advanced fitness)
Features an advanced high intensity 10 minute cardio workout to increase cardio fitness.

The three workout sessions are available to view on Bowls England’s YouTube Channel at:

Disclaimer: For those of you who are going to join in with the Bowls England workout sessions, please ensure you have created some space around you, have some water at the ready! By taking part in the workout sessions, you are taking responsibility for your own safety in your own space and you hereby confirm that you are physically fit and do not know of any reason why you should not be exercising or taking part in the sessions.

THE EXTRA END – Bowls England Official Podcast | Episode 2 – John McGuinness

Bowls England’s High Performance Director, John McGuiness, chats to Bowls International editor and England International Sian Honnor about his life within the sport and his thoughts on his role.

Although he does talk about our high level, national players, the basic underlying philosophy still translates to the way that we should approach the game.

THE EXTRA END – Bowls England Official Podcast | Episode 1

Bowls England’s outgoing Chief Executive, Tony Allcock OBE, chats to Bowls International editor and England International Sian Honnor about his life within the sport and his thoughts on his and the Sports future.

As we are all in Covid19 Lock Down and probably looking for something to fill our day, this 56 minute interview is well worth a listen – especially his thoughts towards the end on how he sees the need for game  format to change and the need for Clubs to embrace change, to enable the survival of the sport.

I have listened to it and would recommend everyone giving it a listen (Ken Tudor)
